Leading the way in sustainable agriculture and entrepreneurship in Africa
Hello there! I'm Elizabeth Okullow, but call me Liz. I'm an agripreneur with dirt under my nails and a fire in my belly to feed the world sustainably. My journey started by the shores of Lake Victoria, where the salty breeze carried the rhythm of life for my fisherfolk community.
But amidst the abundance of water and fertile land, there was a harsh reality: poverty. I saw families struggling, surrounded by underutilized land. It didn't sit right with me. I knew there had to be a way to unlock the potential of our land, even in small spaces.
So, after studying microbiology at Karatina University, I took a leap and became an agripreneur. I wasn't just any entrepreneur; I wanted to revolutionize agriculture. I dove into the world of hydroponics, growing food without soil, and started my first venture. It was a small step, but it felt like a giant leap towards a greener future.
Over the years, I've walked alongside farmers, sharing their challenges and triumphs. One thing that tugged at my heartstrings was the dwindling fish stocks in Lake Victoria. It wasn't just an environmental issue; it impacted my grandmother, a fishmonger whose livelihood depended on the lake's bounty. That's when I knew I had to act.
Thus, AquaMnara was born. It's my way of giving back to the fisherfolk community and aspiring fish farmers. We empower them with the tools they need – access to inputs, cutting-edge technology, and market connections – to support them at every stage of their aquaculture journey.
But my passion doesn't stop there. I'm also a champion for young African trailblazers in the agriculture and blue economy sectors. I share their stories on this blog, hoping to inspire others to join this mission of feeding the world sustainably.
So, whether you're a seasoned farmer, a curious young mind, or simply someone who wants to make a difference, welcome to my patch! Let's grow food, hope, and inspiration together.
